A closer look at Native Land

What Native Land does

Native Land is an app and resource that maps Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages. The site aims to present maps and stories carried by people with ancestral relationships to land and waters, and to change how people see history and the present day.

It is Indigenous-led and focuses on interconnecting Indigenous communities, documenting research, and providing educational resources to correct how people speak about colonialism and indigeneity.

What you can actually do on the site

Use a searchable map of Indigenous territories, treaties, and languages and explore a collection of Indigenous placenames.

Access blog stories, research references, territory, language and treaty reference pages, and an API with geoJSONs. The site also offers a Land and Waters Acknowledgment Guide called Kōrero to help create thoughtful acknowledgments.

Who might find it useful

People wanting to learn about Indigenous territories, languages, and histories from perspectives that seek to go beyond colonial frameworks will find the maps and resources helpful.

Educators, researchers, community members, and organizations looking for reference material, API data in geoJSON format, or guidance on acknowledgments may find specific practical value.

Ways to support or get involved

The site lists partners and invites contributions to improve the map and expand coverage. You can support the organization via Patreon or join a Supporter’s Circle to help deepen community connections.
