A closer look at Ledge - music, your next meeting, and more in the MacBook notch

What Ledge puts in your MacBook notch

Ledge is an open-source notch app for MacBook that shows live status items in the notch area: now playing (with cover art, title, scrub bar and transport/send-to-AirPods controls), a timer, your next meeting with a camera mirror on the Join button, weather, notes, Keep Awake (including lid-closed mode), AirPods, and volume and brightness readouts.

It is designed to be quiet when nothing is happening and appear where your eyes already look: the black bar around the notch.

How it works and what it asks for

Ledge is GPL-3.0 source code; the repository includes the full source. It ships signed and notarized and records no audio or screen.

It uses a few private macOS frameworks to offer features macOS does not expose publicly, and installs a small helper when needed (for Keep Awake lid-closed a root helper manages a 90-second lease). Permissions are requested by the feature that needs them from Settings, and nothing is asked at launch.

Only four network calls occur: weather (Open-Meteo, location rounded), place name (Apple), cover art, and update checks.

Who it’s for and how to get it running

You need a MacBook with a notch running macOS 26 or later; Ledge draws only on that built-in display. It is not sandboxed and may break on macOS updates, and it cannot be sold on the App Store.

To try it: download the DMG, drag Ledge into Applications and open it from Finder (starting from a terminal hands permissions to the terminal). It keeps itself up to date with Sparkle and exposes Settings and Quit inside the app.

Questions people ask about Ledge - music, your next meeting, and more in the MacBook notch

Does Ledge record my camera, microphone, or screen?
No; Ledge records nothing from the camera, audio or screen, and the camera mirror opens only when you press Join.
Will it work on an external monitor?
No; Ledge draws only on the MacBook's built-in display with a notch and nowhere else by design.
Do I need special build tools or signing to build it?
Yes; the project requires Swift 6.2 and an Apple Development signing identity to build.
