Relaxing Websites to Calm Your Mind in Five Minutes

Some days the internet is the noisiest place there is. Notifications, headlines, arguments in the comments. But the same internet also has quiet little corners built for the opposite: a place to breathe, listen to rain, or watch something slow for a few minutes.

These relaxing websites are free, need no sign up, and work in any browser. Open one, put your phone face down, and give yourself five minutes.

Sounds to sink into

1. A Soft Murmur

A Soft Murmur lets you mix your own background: rain, thunder, waves, wind, a crackling fire, a coffee shop. Set the sliders once and it becomes your go-to for focus or sleep.

2. Rainy Mood

One button, one sound: rain. Rainy Mood has been around for years for a reason. It is the simplest way to make a busy room feel calm.

3. myNoise

myNoise is a huge library of soundscapes, from a Japanese garden to a spaceship engine room, and each one can be tuned to your ears. If ambient sound is your thing, this is the deep end.

4. Noisli

Noisli has a clean, simple mixer for background sounds, with timers for focused work. The free version is plenty for a daily calm-down.

5. Lofi Girl

The girl studying by the window with her cat has been playing chill beats around the clock for years. Lofi Girl on YouTube is the soundtrack of a million late night study sessions.

Things to watch slowly

6. WindowSwap

WindowSwap shows you the view out of someone else's window, somewhere in the world, with the real sound of the room. A street in Lisbon, a garden in Kenya, snow in Canada. Press the button for another.

7. Live nature cams

Watching animals live is surprisingly calming. The Monterey Bay Aquarium jellyfish cam and the wildlife cams on explore.org are two of the best. We put together a whole list of live webcams around the world if you want more.

8. Radio Garden

Spin a globe, land anywhere, and you are listening to live radio from that town. Radio Garden is a lovely way to feel the world is bigger than your feed.

Something for your hands

9. Weavesilk

Move your mouse or finger and Silk turns it into flowing, symmetrical light. There is no goal and no wrong answer, which is exactly why it works.

10. Sandspiel

Sandspiel is a falling sand game: pour sand, water, fire, plants and lava and watch what happens. It is the digital version of playing with sand at the beach.

11. Little Alchemy 2

Slow, gentle and quietly satisfying. Little Alchemy 2 has you combine elements to discover new things, at your own pace, with soft music in the background.

A two minute reset

No website needed for this one. Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, breathe out for four, hold for four. Do it four times. It is called box breathing, and it is a quick way to slow everything down before you open the next tab.

These sites are a nice way to take a break, but they are not a replacement for real support. If your head has been too loud for a while, talking to someone you trust or a professional can help.

Find your own quiet corner

The calmest sites are often the ones nobody has heard of yet. People share them on NexURLs every day. Browse Design and Art or the weird and wonderful side of the web, and save the ones that help.
