Finding panics with Call Graph Analyzer
For and with Microsoft under the Open Device Partnership, we have developed and released the Call Graph Analyzer (CGA), a tool to extract the callgraph from monomorphized MIR. This callgraph can be used to track down what functions in the compiled binary can panic. In this blogpost we discuss why this new approach is both better and worse than pre-existing approaches.
Quick read
A blog post introducing the Call Graph Analyzer (CGA), a tool that extracts call graphs from monomorphized MIR to help find which compiled Rust functions can panic. It explains why locating panics is useful and compares CGA to existing panic-detection approaches.
- Run cargo cga check to list potential panic paths
- Compare CGA with linker, DWARF, HIR/MIR, and rust-analyzer methods
- Use results to find unintended panics and reason about panic paths
