A closer look at Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
What Survival LLM is on your computer
Survival LLM is a free, open-source AI assistant and an offline library that runs entirely on your own Mac or Windows machine. The AI model and the reference library live locally so your questions do not leave your computer, and after setup it can work with no internet connection. Every answer shows the articles the app read and links to the exact passages it used.
What you can actually do with it
Ask practical emergency and how-to questions - food safety in a blackout, treating burns, purifying water, repair and survival guidance - and the app searches its local library (medical references, FEMA and CDC guidance, manuals, how-to guides and about 930,000 Wikipedia articles) to answer. You can add your own PDFs, Word docs, ebooks and notes so the assistant searches them too. Each answer labels whether it came from memory or from specific articles, and you can click sources to read the highlighted passages.
System needs, setup and library choices
Download and unzip the app for Mac (Apple Silicon M1 or newer, macOS 14 Sonoma or newer) or 64-bit Windows 10/11. The app downloads an AI model chosen to fit your computer; more RAM lets it use a smarter model. Library sizes: a full download versus a smaller Essentials option; the page lists exact disk space behavior during install and free space requirements. Setup takes roughly 20 minutes to 2½ hours depending on connection and computer; you click for about five minutes and the rest is downloading.
Questions people ask about Survival LLM: AI assistant and emergency library that runs on your own computer
- Does it send my questions to the internet?

- Can I check where each answer came from?
- Yes - every answer lists the articles used and lets you click to read the exact highlighted passage.
- Will it run on a laptop battery during an outage?
- The page gives an example power use on a MacBook Pro and notes a small generator or power station can run it; battery endurance depends on your hardware and model size.
